Kalavantin Durg is easily seen from Panvel. It is prabalgad Fort opposite to Matheran and next to Prabalgad Fort. Kalavantin is 500 meters high from pinnacle on the northern edge of the Prabalgad plateau. Kalavantin Durg is a good one day trek near Mumbai.



Know some details before you go to Kalavantin Durg Trek

Where : Kalavantin Durg Trek.
Height : 2300 ft.
Nearest Railway Station : Panvel.
Base Village : Thakurwadi Village.
Travel Expenses : Above 200 [only for if you going by train and ST bus]
                             From Mumbai to Panvel [Return] will cost 30 Rs.
                             From Panvel if you take ST bus that will cost 20 to 30 Rs.
                             If you take taxi or tumtum it will cost 100 to 150 per person.
                             Entry fees to the fort will cost 50 Rs.
Best Time to Visit : It is possible throughout the year, the best time to visit is between October and May.It is advisable to avoid in monsoon season.


Kalavantin Durg Information : It was built by Bahmani Sultanate. It has been said that Kalavantin Durg was built in honour of Queen Kalavantin. Kalavantin Durg has excellent view of it's surrounding mountains. When one goes on the top of Kalavantin Durg, one can see whole Matheran mountain range. The main attraction of Kalavantin Durg is the climb to Pinnacle. Steps have been carved in the mountain with no protection. It is one of the famous trekking place near Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane.



How to reach Kalavantin Durg : Kalavantin Durg can be reached via Panvel station. There are St buses available from Panvel bus top to the base village Thakurwadi Village. The buses from Panvel to Thakurwadi starts from around 5 am and the last bus is at 8 pm.[Getting down to Thakurwadi village one can ask locals 
about the trek route].

If from Panvel you hire a Tum Tum or rickshaw you will get down at Shedung Phata. Again from Shedung Phata you need to hire another rickshaw till Thakurwadi Village.

Trek route to Kalavantin Durg : Kalavantin Durg treks begins from Thakurwadi Village. 15 mins from Thakurwadi village we reach a place where one can park their vehicles. Entry fee for bikes in monsoon season is Rs.50 and from winter to summer Rs.20. Parking fee for four-wheeler is Rs.50.


The trekking route is zig-zag till the Prabalmachi Village. From Prabalmachi route is divided into two parts, the left route goes to Kalavantin Durg and the right route goes to Prabalgad fort.[If felt confused enquire locals otherwise you may go to the wrong route]. After half an hour of the trek from Prabalmachi village, we reach between the Kalavantin and Prabalgad fort. From there, the rock cut stairs are very much bigger in height. Climbing stairs in rainy season is risky. So, either take utmost care or avoid trekking in monsoon.


The last patch is climbing of 15 feet rock and the most difficult patch of Kalavantin Durg Trek. Ropes have been placed which helps the trekkers to overcome this difficult patch.

  4. Whole view of the Matheran Mountain Range.
Time to reach at the top of Kalavantin Durg : 2-3 hours.

Camping / Accommodation Facility: There is no place available to stay on the top of Kalavantin Durg. If you want to stay on the top of Kalavantin Durg, then you should have your own tent. The Best place is to stay is Prabalmachi Village. Prabalmachi village is the huge plateau and Toilets facility is available in Prabalmachi Village and you can also get mixed with locals.

Food Facility : Food facility is available in Prabalmachi village. Prabalmachi village is situated at the base of Kalavantin Durg and Prabalgad Fort.
